Gluten and Peanut Sensitive Children
Martin’s School of Cooking announces special Kids Camp series for gluten- and peanut-sensitive children
SOUTH BEND, IN/June 9, 2010/Martin’s Super Markets -- Martin’s Super Markets’ School of Cooking, located at 7355 Heritage Square in Granger, announces a special addition to its summer Kids Camp lineup: Fun & Funky Food Factory. The five-day class series, which begins Monday, August 9, will be in session from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. daily.
The series is tailored for kids age five to nine who experience difficulty tolerating foods with gluten or peanuts. Often referred to as gluten or peanut sensitive, these children can enjoy many of the same foods non-sensitive kids crave if coached on both acceptable ingredients and safe cooking techniques.
Kids Camp Instructor Darcy Bloss brings a wealth of experience to this special edition of Martin’s Kids Camp. As the Gluten Free Pastry Chef for a popular local restaurant, Darcy has been cooking and living gluten free for a number of years. When food allergies presented themselves in her children, Darcy quickly learned the challenges of cooking and living without gluten, milk, soy and eggs. Her mission is to not only to create meals and baked goods that taste as delicious as their gluten filled counterparts, but also to pass that knowledge on to others, especially children.
Young students will use hands-on skills learned during camp to create delicious variations on favorites like cookies, cakes, comfort foods, breakfast breads and healthy snacks.
The cooking classroom is located on the second floor of the Heritage Square Martin’s Side Door Deli. Featuring state-of-the-art KitchenAid appliances, the classroom can accommodate up to 16 students for this class series.
Tickets are $110 per child and are available at the Customer Service counter at the Heritage Square store. Parents or family members of gluten- or peanut-sensitive kids may contact Cooking School Coordinator Elise Kunkel for additional information. She can be reached at (574) 807-8220 or by email at ekunkel@martins-supermarkets.com.
Martin’s Super Markets was founded in 1947 and currently has 20 stores in South Bend, Mishawaka, Granger, Elkhart, Goshen, Plymouth, Nappanee and Logansport, Indiana, and Niles, Stevensville and St. Joseph, Michigan.
