South Bend, IN –The Samaritan Counseling Center will host the 9th Annual Samaritan Awards Luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5, at Windsor Park Conference Center.  Mr. Jerry Scott, Senior Vice President, Human Resources and Corporate Administration at Towne Air Freight, will be the keynote speaker, sharing his thoughts on keeping faith in a once in a generation economic downturn.  Jon Thompson will be returning as Master of Ceremonies.  Tickets are $35 per person, $100 for two luncheon seats and program recognition, or $350 to sponsor a table of eight. Reservations are requested by April 23 and may be made by calling the Samaritan Counseling Center at (574) 277-0274. Monies raised benefit the Samaritan Center’s Client Assistance Fund, which is used to defray the cost of counseling for economically disadvantaged individuals and families who seek professional counseling therapy.

The Samaritan Award was established in 2000 by the Samaritan Counseling Center, located at 17195 Cleveland Road in South Bend.  The award honors organizations that demonstrate by their policies and practices excellence in providing a healthy work/life balance for their employees.  To be considered for the award, organizations must be located in St. Joseph County and have 10 or more employees.

Recipient(s) of the 2010 Samaritan Award will be announced at the luncheon. Employers being recognized include:

  • Salon Nouveau
  • Hoosier Spring
  • Goodwill Industries of Michiana
  • Holy Cross College
  • Midland Engineering and
  • The Skillet Restaurant and Catering
“Even as economic uncertainty forces employers to revise operating models and find new ways to control expenses, several organizations in St. Joseph County stand out for their continued commitment to work/life balance.  Promoting the commendable practices of these organizations will motivate other area employers to improve their own work environments, with benefits cascading from employees to families and the entire community,” states Tom Yarger, Co-chairperson, Samaritan Awards Steering Committee.

A panel of community leaders selects recipients of the Samaritan Award using research compiled by Saint Mary’s College students under the direction of their professor Dr. Ujvala Rajadhyaksha.  This year’s Selection Committee includes Tim Harmon, Managing Editor, South

Bend Tribune; The Right Reverend Edward S. Little, Episcopal Bishop of Northern Indiana; Bonnie Bozata, Executive Director, Bridges out of Poverty; and The Honorable William Whitman.
